Covid 19 Update

2021 CLASS CANCELATION

We would like to express our gratitude to all students and instructors for your patience and understanding during the last year and a half as we navigate through this pandemic. We met with the board over the last few days discussing the 2021 season and how it is affected by the current Pandemic status. We worked through different scenarios trying to find a solution that was financially feasible for us to open while keeping up with Georgia and CDC guidelines to keep our students, teachers and staff safe. We are sad to say, our efforts lead to the decision that it is not going to be possible to open in a traditional way this year. The following are reasons why it would not be viable for us to open:

Limited class sizes reduced tuition income
Increased costs including additional sanitation, food and supplies exceeds reduced tuition income
Multiple meal times required to meet the 3.5 ft social distancing requirements would add additional cost
Cancelation of events such as orientation, auction, tailgating and show-n-tell because of social distancing rules, would reduce the overall William Holland experience

Although we are canceling our campus classes, we are excited to announce we are planning new ways to stay connected safely during this time through the following events

Online classes and workshops
Teacher demos
Weekly online auctions and special selling events
Monthly selling events on campus (cabs/slabs)
Open house events for new students
New user-friendly website with the ability to purchase tools and equipment
Updated classrooms and tool kits for students in 2022
Three additional weeks added to the 2022 season

We are working very hard to keep YOU uppermost in our hearts and minds by creating new avenues for you to enjoy and stay connected. We miss our students and the friendship each of you bring, but we want to keep everyone safe to enjoy another year at William Holland.
We will be in touch soon with more details on deposits/payments from the 2021 season along with some promotional offers for the upcoming 2022 season!

We are so thankful for our William Holland family,

Kristine and Corie
William Holland Staff

2021 Refund Policy

As we have made the decision to cancel classes for the 2021 season, we know many of you have paid in full or paid deposits for your classes. Please read the following policy and let us know if you have any questions. We are so grateful for your understanding and support during this time...please know our goal is to come back stronger than ever in 2022!

In 2021 we are asking that you donate, hold or request a refund of your fees and deposits. Our Pandemic Refund Policy printed in our catalog and website states all requests for refunds must be by email or mail (no phone messages). These requests will be paid by the end of 2021 as funds are available.

We also request that you donate or place your 2021 fees on hold for 2022. If you would like to donate or place your class on hold please contact Corie.

Refund requests: corie@lapidaryschool.org

Or mail to: PO Box 980
Young Harris, GA 30582

In 2020 you were asked if you would like to donate, refund or have fees placed on hold. All refunds were made, donations were moved to the general fund and requests for holds were moved to the hold status. We have moved all 2020 hold to the 2022 season...there is no need to send a request at this time unless you would like to move these funds to a donation. We have kept good records and rest assured your 2020 deposits that were placed on hold will be held over to 2022!

Promotion If you paid for your class in full or have over $400 in deposits or do so by June 30, 2021 and allow us to hold your funds for the 2022 season, we will honor the 2021 pricing, as we will have a small tuition increase in 2022.

We want to thank everyone again for your continued support as we navigate through these unprecedented times. I am sure none of us predicted we would still be in this situation in 2021. We understand that some of you are also having a difficult time so please contact Kristine directly if you need an exception to this policy, we will try to work with everyone as much as possible.

2021 CLASSES..

As we look to evaluate how Covid-19 may impact our 2021 season, we must look at the best information available to us at this moment while also looking back at what we have already learned about this pandemic. When we started registration in October last year the Covid-19 numbers were heading in the right direction and we had every belief that we would be able to start the 2021 season on time. We have a solid plan to keep our students and instructors as safe as possible with updated pandemic safety policies. We are looking at the situation with fresh eyes as we get closer to our opening date and unfortunately with the numbers at record levels and government imposed regulations, we have recognized we will not be permitted to open in April. After much discussion the Board and I have decided that June 13th will be a much better anticipated opening date. We will continue to monitor the situation closely and will follow all Federal and Georgia state regulations. We believe delaying the start date is in the best interest and safety of our students, instructors and staff.

We feel strongly about the need to make decisions well in advance for both students and instructors. Given what we know right now about current cases, the more contagious virus strain, the current state of vaccine distribution and the current restrictions in place in Georgia...we cannot, in good conscience, start classes in April. We will be reaching out to students enrolled in April, May and beginning of June to help reschedule their class or determine if they want a refund or hold their deposit until a future date. We are all anxious to resume some normalcy in our lives, returning to our friends and classes at William Holland but we are legally required to follow regulations such as limits on gatherings and social distancing. We appreciate everyone's understanding at this time.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Laster family...our sweet Wanda passed today and I know she is back in the loving arms of her beloved Toby! Wanda was loved so much by everyone, always a sweet smile and kind words!!! Toby and Wanda were like celebrities around here, whenever they came for a visit you could hear teachers and students whispering...did you see Toby and Wanda, they are in the school today!!!! We are honored to have known you both, the school will never be quite the same without you

2021 REGISTRATION....

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

I HAVE A DEPOSIT ON HOLD FROM 2020, HOW DO I USE IT? If you have a deposit on hold you have THREE options...

We can apply your deposit from 2020 to a 2021 class, just request in writing through email or mail.

Place another deposit for 2021 classes and we will use your deposit from 2020 to pay down your balance when you check in for your class. This would be greatly appreciated as our funds are getting low without students here this year.

Purchase a Gift Certificate from us to pay off your class/classes, you will receive $20 off if you pay for the entire class upfront (valid for lodging students only). The card will be good for 3 years (we are offering this option incase the virus is still an issue in 2021). To qualify for the discount you must purchase the gift card for a minimum of $325.

IF I SIGNED UP FOR A CLASS THIS YEAR AND IT WAS CANCELED WILL I AUTOMATICALLY BE PUT IN THAT CLASS FOR 2021?

No...we are sorry but our system will not allow us to do this. Classes for 2020 get removed when the 2021 classes are added. We had over 1400 students signed up this year and it would be too difficult to track everyone by hand with only part time admin working at this time.

DO I GET PRIORITY IF I SIGNED UP FOR A CLASS IN 2020 AND I WANT THE SAME CLASS IN 2021?

Again we apologize, but it would be impossible to do this as our classes have changed dates, some teachers are not teaching next year and class sizes have changed. We recommend signing up online at 10am on the 12th of October if you want a specific class.

IF I MAIL MY APPLICATION IN WILL I GET PRIORITY OR BE ENTERED INTO MY CLASS BEFORE REGISTRATION STARTS?

We will start entering mail-in applications on registration day in the order we receive them. We recommend using online registration if you are trying to get into a class that fills up quickly. We cannot take responsibility for the mail arriving in a timely manner right now.

Our deepest condolences to the Monroe family, Don past away on Tuesday. Besides teaching silver classes for years he was a WHS fixture at Thursday night auctions. He and his wife Ann taught at our School as well as at Wild Acres. He was a past president of the Federation and wrote columns for the Lodestar.
Ann Monroe asked that I share the following to his William Holland family...
Paul Roberts will be officiating a graveside funeral on Friday October 2nd at Meadow View Cemetery at 2pm and visitation will be on Thursday October 1st from 6 to 8pm at Mountain View Funeral Home. Please keep his family in our thoughts and prayers.

We would like to congratulate Nancy English on her retirement from the Board of Directors and as an instructor at William Holland. We are so grateful for all of her support through the years. If you were lucky enough to take one of her classes, you know this woman with her big Kentucky smile has a heart of gold and a passion to teach. Please know you are missed so much by all who attend...we wish you nothing but happiness and good health. Thank you for all you have done for our wonderful school, we are truly grateful and blessed to have your support!

We would like to welcome and congratulate Vickie Prillaman as the newest William Holland board member. Vickie has been a loyal supporter of the school by teaching silver classes for 23 years as well as building Mary Lous teacher housing with her husband Harry Prillaman. Welcome Vickie we are excited to have you on the board!

As our country is in great controversy over whether to open back up to normal activities, the school must consider what is right for our community. In Georgia we have opened some businesses with strict social distancing requirements and the 65+ age group, along with those with a compromised immune system are still on a stay at home order until further notice. The board and I have discussed every situation that happens in a normal week here at William Holland and have all come to the same conclusion that we cannot keep our students, instructors and staff safe in our environment during this health crisis. It is with great sadness that I must notify everyone that we will NOT be opening for the 2020 school season. The health and wellness of all our students and instructors is and will always remain our first priority.

Here are some of the factors that helped us make this difficult decision

Instructors not able to get supplies needed for their classes, or costs are just too high during this time
Buildings do not allow for the required 6 feet social distancing
Cafeteria will not accommodate social distancing even with splitting into two shifts
Classrooms are meant to have a close intimate feeling, we share equipment, tools as well as huddle for student demos
Sanitation supplies are in short demandI have been trying since early March to get hand sanitizer stations installed through out the school with no luck, still on waiting list from suppliers. Toilet paper, paper towels and masks are still in short supply.

We are so grateful for all of students and instructors who have been so generous and patient with us during this time. We are truly a wonderful community of friends and family!

...Our condolences to the family of Kathy Kinev, our Gem Identification Instructor who lost her mom today to a long battle with cancer. Please join us in sending healing thought and prayers their way.

...Our deepest condolences to the family of Bill Heath who passed away on April 7th from extended health issues. Join us in sending healing wishes and prayers to his two sons, daughter and beautiful wife Vivian. As many of you know Vivian has been part of the William Holland family from almost the beginning serving as an Instructor and Board Member for many years. Bill joined us on Tuesday nights for dinner as his wife always volunteered her time for the weekly auction...he was such a kind soul and we will miss his presence here at the school. They were such a beautiful couple, always celebrating with us for their anniversary by supplying cake to all the students and staff.

...Our deepest condolences to the Sparks family for the loss of their brother Richard Sparks. Please join us in sending healing thoughts and prayers to the entire family especially his wife Nicky as they face this unexpected loss.

...After over 30 years we would like to congratulate Suzanne Wagner, CEO of William Holland Retreat, Inc., on her retirement. We would like to thank her for keeping this wonderful school viable and prosperous as well as keeping the family legacy alive for all to enjoy. We hope to see her visiting us regularly.

...We would also like to congratulate and welcome our new Director, Kristine Robertson. She has been a familiar face around William Holland for the last 10 years as a student and serving as the Director of the Southeastern Federation Week at William Holland for the last 3 years. Kristine has an extensive background in Marketing and Management and we are excited to have her join the William Holland team...let's give her a big welcome!
